Malaysia's First-Ever FL5 Type R Trackday & Mega Gathering Sets Records at Sepang
On August 2nd, 2025, the Sepang International Circuit witnessed history with the first official Honda Civic FL5 Type R Trackday & Mega Gathering in Malaysia. Organized by the FL5 Group Malaysia with the help of a few familiar faces from the FK8 Owners Group as well, the event drew a massive crowd of car enthusiasts and owners, setting a new benchmark for the largest FL5 gathering at Sepang.
The gathering kicked off at 5pm, bringing together 223 Civic FL5 Type-Rs from across the nation, some even turned up earlier than the determined time of arrival. As the golden hour approached, more than 200+ cars lined up for a parade lap(s) around the iconic circuit at 6pm, offering perfect sunset photo opportunities. They even took an extra lap round the circuit "for the 'gram".
When the 200+ cars lined up at the starting grid of the track, group photos & sponsor photos were taken by the array of media teams from numerous pages & brands. The organisers also had "grid girls" brightening up the group shots, and throughout the event.
Soon as the parade laps ended, the lead cars continued to the end of the pit-lane for another surprise parade lap, this time; it was for the special appearance of Hiroshi Tamura, the legendary engineer known as the Father of the Modern GT-R, behind the wheel of a rare 2024 Nissan GT-R T-Spec and tuned by TopSecret Racing Japan, accompanied by a "wave" of Nissan GTRs & Skylines trailing behind the VIP of the day.
Tamura-san was in Malaysia for a meet-and-greet with the Nissan GT-R community at Gamuda Cove earlier that day, organized in conjunction with Tokyo Auto Salon Kuala Lumpur (which we will attend as well). Thanks to a collaboration between the Tokyo Auto Salon's organizers and FL5 Group Malaysia, Tamura’s presence added prestige and excitement to the event.
This event made headlines between the communities, that even the CEO of Sepang Circuit, En Azhan Shafriman Hanif (second from right), stopped by to see the turn-out from the massive fans & supporters of the FL5 community.
Appearing at the event as well, is one of Ruffedge's singer, and a friend to us as well; CatFarish & his beautiful wife, Shikin Maembong. We hope to see CatFarish at more automotive events, where we hope his wife would talk him into buying a car to join the car scene. (side eye engaged)
The adrenaline-fueled track session began at 8pm, where 71 drivers registered for the time attack challenge, and it continued until midnight, concluding the four-hour track session. Plenty of time for each and every track participants to enjoy watching and embracing the multiple sounds of Civic Type-Rs going around, lap after lap of the 5.5 kilometres race track.
The night wasn’t just about gathering numbers—it was about performance, too. A new fastest FL5 Type R lap record was set at Sepang, clocking a blistering fast time of 2:16.971. It was achieved by the guys at Team 31 Motorsports’ aggressive set-up’d Civic FL5 Type R and driven by Amer Harris (a name with multiple record-setting laptimes around Sepang in all kinds of track set-up road cars & racing machines).
Personal best times were also achieved by some owners, and newcomers had their go around the circuit as well, which made the event filled with smiles & laughs around the pit areas.
With its massive turnout, passionate crowd, and record-setting moments, this FL5 Trackday proved to be a defining event for Honda enthusiasts in Malaysia—just a week ahead of the much-anticipated Tokyo Auto Salon KL.
What's started with the brainchild of only three passionate enthusiasts, facing endless roadblocks, unsupported ideas & financially challenged to get this event "off the ground", then came in more people to lend a hand to support and help fill in the gaps of more manpower and managing the planning & arrangements to make this gathering; a big success. All those late nights discussions & meetings, sacrifices made & finding that extra strength at the end of the day just to ensure this day happens, all for the fans, by the fans. And the Civic Type R is the main contributor to this project.
The organisers couldn’t make this track day & mega gathering a success, without the help of the partners & sponsors; House of Type R, XPEL Malaysia, Access Orange, GoodYear & Prince Lubricants.
